The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Averett University recommend students living in residence halls have the meningococcal meningitis vaccination to reduce disease risk. College students living in close quarters are at higher risk for meningococcal disease than their peers the same age who do not attend college.

Meningococcal disease often begins with symptoms that can be mistaken for common illnesses such as the flu. It is dangerous because it progresses rapidly. It infects 3,000 Americans each year, kills 11% of those infected and leaves up to 15% of survivors with long-term or permanent disabilities.
